Dentistry in the United Kingdom is in the process of phenomenal change and come April 2011 guaranteed funding for NHS practices will disappear. The initial spectre of the end of ring-fencing in 2009 has been a great cause of anxiety, but a low-key announcement, on an unrelated press release, of a two year extension, preceded the budget. Traditionally the dental profession has been guided and directed significantly by the National Health Service, but this profession is now undergoing a long overdue transition to the private sector.

So existing NHS practices will need to have a plan in place or base their future income on hope. Hope there will be more money; hope things will improve, and hope their practices will survive. Is this really the scientific way to approach a business? Do I need to answer this? There are even predictions of terminating limited contracts and downward pressure on UDA values. A daunting period is lying ahead.
